E-Waste

The greenest equipment is the equipment that gets used again

Laboratory, medical, and industrial equipment is built to last for decades. Most of it is replaced long before it stops working: a grant ends, a protocol changes, a facility consolidates. The equipment is still capable, but it has nowhere to go.

Since 2015 we have been the alternative to the dumpster. We buy, test, and resell working equipment so that it serves another organization instead of becoming waste. What genuinely cannot be reused is dismantled and processed by our recycling partners, including an R2v3-certified recycler. Nothing we collect goes to landfill.

Reuse first, recycle second

When equipment leaves a facility through us, it goes down one of three paths.

Resale

Functional equipment is inspected, cleaned, tested where possible, and listed for sale to labs and facilities that need it.

Harvest

Units that are not economical to repair are stripped for working modules, boards, rotors, optics, pumps, and accessories that keep other equipment running.

Recycling

What is left, such as chassis metal, circuit boards, cabling, and transformers, goes to our recycling partners, including an R2v3-certified recycler.

What we take, and what we cannot

We accept

  • Analytical instruments: HPLC, GC, mass spectrometers, spectrophotometers
  • Molecular biology equipment: thermal cyclers, electrophoresis systems, imagers
  • Centrifuges and rotors
  • Incubators, ovens, water baths, environmental chambers
  • Lab refrigerators and freezers, including ultra-low units
  • Liquid handlers, microplate readers and washers, pipettors
  • Microscopes and imaging systems
  • Medical, industrial, and semiconductor equipment
  • Instrument-attached computers, controllers, and workstations

We cannot accept

  • Equipment with biological, chemical, or radiological contamination that has not been decontaminated and documented
  • Radioactive sources, including sealed sources in older instruments
  • Bulk chemicals, reagents, solvents, and compressed gas cylinders
  • Sharps, biological samples, and anything that requires medical waste handling

Some components inside otherwise ordinary equipment are regulated separately, including lithium and lead-acid batteries, mercury lamps and switches, refrigerants in cooling units, and CRT displays. If you are unsure whether an item qualifies, send us the manufacturer and model number and we will tell you before you commit to anything.

Data on instrument computers

This is the risk most organizations overlook. Many modern instruments ship with an embedded computer, and that computer can hold run data, sample identifiers, method files, network credentials, and sometimes patient or study information.

If your equipment holds data, tell us before pickup. We will agree with you in advance how the drives are handled, so the question is settled before the equipment leaves your building.

Decommissioning and removal

We do not just take equipment away, we take it out. For facilities in the Pacific Northwest our team works on site to decommission equipment safely: disconnecting services, draining fluids, securing rotors and moving assemblies, and crating or palletizing for transport. For a single unit or an entire facility closeout, we handle inventory, labeling, packing, and freight. See Packing & Shipping for how we handle the logistics.

Chain of custody on every pickup

Every pickup is documented from your building to final processing. You receive an itemized record of what we collected, with the manufacturer and model number of each unit, and chain-of-custody documentation you can file for asset retirement, grant reporting, or internal audit.

Arrange a pickup

Send us a list of what you have, including manufacturer, model number, quantity, and condition, along with your location and timeline. We will tell you which items have resale value, which we will take for recycling, and which need a specialist handler. Where equipment has resale value, you get paid for it instead of paying to dispose of it.
